A Practical Framework for Comparing Trading Platforms

8 min readUpdated for 2026

Look Past the Headline Rate

Marketing pages tend to lead with the most flattering number — a zero-commission headline, for instance. Always check the full fee schedule for FX conversion charges, inactivity charges and account fees, as these often matter more over a full year than the headline rate.

Range of Markets and Order Types

Consider how many markets a platform actually gives you access to, and whether it supports the order types you're likely to need — including basic stop-loss functionality, which is a core risk-management tool for any active trader.

Platform Stability and Support

Execution speed and platform uptime matter more once you're trading actively. Read recent independent reviews (not just curated testimonials) and check whether the provider publishes any transparency reporting on outages or execution quality.

Our Scoring Methodology

Every platform listed on UK Broker Insight is scored against a consistent set of criteria: regulatory standing, platform usability, breadth of markets, charting and research tools, and the quality of educational resources. Scores are reviewed and refreshed on a rolling basis as providers update their offering.
